FAQs

The Ten Most Frequently Asked Questions at Oren Plastering

  1. ARE YOU HIRING?
  A.  No. We are a small, employee-owned, union company with a highly skilled workforce. We find it is easier to control our quality by staying small.

  1. DO YOU SELL PLASTER MATERIALS?
  A.  No, but our sister company, Oren Fab & Supply, Inc. does. They carry a full line of plaster supplies and tools for the professional. You can contact them at 937-236-2399. Their hours are 7:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday. If you are picking up materials you may want to come before 2:00 pm, though. The warehouse crew leaves around 2, so you may have to load your own truck. :-)

  1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OREN ASSOCIATES AND OREN PLASTERING?
  A.  Oren Associates was owned by Kenneth Oren, who is also a part-time minister. When he decided to get out of the contracting business to concentrate on his ministry, Carol Oren, the sister who owns Oren Fab & Supply, got together with some of the employees of Oren Associates. The group has been able to start a new entity with the same goal: quality work and prompt, friendly service.

  1. IS KEN STILL INVOLVED IN THE BUSINESS?
  A.  Yes. Ken is doing some estimating part-time for Oren Plastering and remains an invaluable resource.

Ken also has a part-time job as the representative for the Dayton Bureau for Lath and Plaster. As such, he is available to architects, designers and general contractors in the Dayton area for questions about the technical aspects of plaster, fireproofing and all types of plaster systems. Take a look at his website:  www.plasterinfo.org

  1. DO YOU DO FIREPROOFING?
  A.  Yes.  Oren Plastering does spray-fireproofing on steel beams, columns and metal deck.

We do not fireproof wood, curtains or combustibles. One source of products for that type of fireproofing is Rose Brand Theatrical Products. Their website is: www.rosebrand.com

  1. DOES OREN FAB & SUPPLY SELL TO DO-IT-YOURSELFERS?
  A.  Yes. All kinds of people buy our plaster products -- professional plasterers, students, artists, dental labs, mold makers, orthopedic shops and, yes, do-it-yourself-first-timers.

Synthetic stucco/EIFS (Dryvit®) products are for certified applicators only, however.

  1. HOW DO I BECOME A CERTIFIED APPLICATOR?
  A.  Contact your local distributor for information on becoming an applicator. To find your local Dryvit® distributor go to: www.dryvit.com then click on Distributor Locator.

8.  HOW DO I BECOME A PLASTERER?
  A. Contact your local "Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons" union and ask about their apprenticeship training. It is a four year course that involves on-the-job training and some classroom training. During that time you learn everything from how to read a blueprint to stucco and whitecoat finish. There is even a section on decorative plaster and casting. Check out the plaster competition at the Ohio State Fair this year to see these apprentices in action. Many other states have competitions, too. The winners of the state competition go on to compete in the National competition in Las Vegas, so they take the opportunity very seriously.

9. IS OREN PLASTERING A WOMAN OWNED BUSINESS?
  A. It is, but, at this time, it is not certified. We are working on it.

  1. WHAT AREA DOES OREN PLASTERING WORK IN?
  A.  Generally we work in the Southwestern part of Ohio -- North to Lima, East to Columbus, South to Cincinnati, and West to Richmond. We will travel farther, however, for the right job. To us that means an ornamental or specialty plaster project or renovation.
